Our Daily Cup of Facebook.

Checking Facebook has become almost as ingrained in the lives of Americans as getting a cup of coffee.

The network revealed Tuesday that on any given day, more than 40 percent of Americans - 128 million people - visit Facebook. Of those visitors daily, about 79 percent, or 101 million, using a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet to access the service. (Worldwide, the company had 699 million users a day in June.)

It's impressive reach, especially in mobile, and the company distributes the data as part of its effort to convince advertisers that it is one of the few online platforms that can reach a mass audience, as television, while also offers targeting specific segments of the public accurately - as the mothers of young children, for example, or regular soda drinkers who have not made a recent purchase.

"We have the intimacy scale," Carolyn Everson, Facebook, vice president of global marketing, said in a recent interview. "There has never been a platform that has been able to provide both."

In general, the advertising industry and analysts have focused on monthly active users, which counts the number of people who visit at least once a month. But Facebook says that daily use is a better measure of its value to advertisers.

"Advertisers should think about how you can combine this type of scale and orientation, flexible creative campaigns that drive results," the company said in a statement announcing the figures. "Understanding that returns at least once a month is only part of the picture. Instead, companies should focus on returning people online every day, because that's how they live their lives."

Strong gains in the second quarter revenue Facebook and suggested that advertisers were getting the message.

The company said it would also release data on its use in other countries. On Tuesday, said 24 million people in Britain visit Facebook every day, with 20 million users of mobile devices.

However, Facebook has a long way to go before it catches up with coffee, daily consumed half of American adults, according to the National Coffee Association. If only the company's engineers could find a way of delivering caffeine through the news service.
